IFPEN to conduct studies on natural hydrogen for DGEC and IEA

In April 2024, the French Directorate General for Energy and Climate (DGEC) commissioned IFPEN to coordinate a study to identify areas with high native hydrogen potential in France, and to take stock of the current state of knowledge. The study involves IFPEN teams and a dozen French academic experts.

The objectives of this study are to review the physico-chemical and kinetic mechanisms of hydrogen generation in the subsoil, to identify high-potential areas in mainland France and overseas territories, and to define possible production methods.

In addition, the aim is to work with all players in the industry to list the priority actions to be taken and all existing projects, in order to promote the development and acceleration of the industry.

At the same time, IFPEN is also leading the “Natural Hydrogen Task” initiated by the TCP H2 (Technology Collaboration Programme Hydrogen) of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Objective: to organize and develop the promotion of natural hydrogen on an international scale.
